Push present: Diamond Band

In the south we like to do something called a “push present”. Basically it is where, in exchange for birthing a baby, mom gets something she wants from dad. Honestly, sounds pretty fair to me. If you’ve never heard of this don’t fret – you can tell your husband later and demand recompense 🙂

Anywho, years ago before Dave and I were even married, I read an article on Pinterest where this woman got a diamond band each time she had a child (thank god she only had 3 and not 7) and stacked them with her engagement ring. The idea was that when her kids were old enough to get married she would give them “their” ring to use in an engagement ring or a wedding band so that they each had their own and didn’t have to fight over her engagement ring. I loved the idea, so when David and I got married I told him I didn’t want a wedding band I only wanted an engagement ring, but that he would pay for it down the road. LOL

When Kensington was born I got my first band – a beautiful platinum infinity band with diamonds (convenient that Kensington’s birth stone was a diamond). I loved the way it looked with my engagement ring and figured even if platinum or infinity bands are out of style when she gets married she can always use the diamonds.

With Everett’s birth this year I wanted something to compliment my existing rings but be slightly different. His is a beautiful band with 7 round diamonds. I absolutely love it.

What were some of your push presents?

Prioritizing your health

I get asked all the time how I fit so much into my day: Corporate Job, Fun Job, 2 young kids, working out, cooking, regular chores, maintaining a social life, etc. There is nothing special about me (I’m not a vampire who doesn’t need sleep or food, I don’t have a time turner to fit more into 24 hours) but I do have some tips to help you prioritize that which is important to you. Don’t worry if your priorities are different than mine, the same general rules apply.

  1. Figure out what is important to you. What are your “life conditions”? For me its Time with my family (including healthy meals), exercise, and earning a living. Everything else is secondary.
  2. Prioritize what is important to you. This is where most people struggle – they think “I want to workout” but then don’t. My husband is a prime example of this (when it comes to working out). Some things I do is I make a personal contract with myself. If I tell myself I’m going to workout at 5 am tomorrow (gah the early exercise regime) – I put it in my phone, I write it in my planner, and I set an alarm. When my alarm goes off, and I undoubtedly don’t want to get up, I remember my contract. If I had promised a friend I would workout with them would I flake? No. So why would a promise to myself mean any less? If you decide you’re going to do something, enter a contract with yourself that you won’t break. Once you do your mentality will totally change (at least mine did). 327C67B1-5BD9-4375-AFE3-CC11DE8E91A5
  3. Make a planner. I don’t care if it is digital (I use Awesome Note), on paper (see my post on Bullet Journaling), or a combination of both (which is what I do), but “write” it down. I have a task that pops up on my phone daily at 6 am called daily routine which includes: Wake up by 6, Brush & floss teeth, Cardio workout, Yoga/stretch, Make Bed, Wash face, Make coffee, Make protein shake for family breakfast. Every day I shoot to check all of the boxes (don’t get me wrong some days I don’t do cardio and I do it later in the day or I skip yoga). It really helps set intention for my day. image
  4. Meditate. Anyone who knows me will tell you my mind runs at 1000 miles per hour. It never stops. I always thought meditation was impossible for me, but once I really committed (i use the headspace app) I found that it made me much more in tune with my mental and physical states and helped me to relax more generally.
  5. Set your goals. I always set goals in 4 categories: Career, Family, Health, and Personal. I try to do it annually and check it quarterly. Make sure they are attainable and will give you a sense of accomplishment. Examples: Career = Get a positive mid year rating and complete “X” project on time. Family = Get child in Swim lessons and do dinner at the table with not TV 4 times per week. Health = Fit into size 4 jeans and be able to do 20 pushups. Personal = Meditate 4 times per week and stretch to touch your toes. NOTE* when it comes go health goals I strongly encourage you to make them about something other than weight. Make them size or strength or food related. Weight is arbitrary – I could care less what i weigh if I fit into my clothes well and feel sexy.
  6. Lastly, put yourself first. Yes your spouse is important, yes your kids are important, yes your friends are important, but if you don’t take care of yourself you can’t take care of them. When Mama is happy everyone is happy.

Body Image

I think everyone struggles with body image issues (if you’ve never had a stray thought about self improvement – you’re probably a terrible person). One of my favorite sayings is “Would you talk to your best friend the way you talk to yourself?”. I’ve always thought that was such a good way of looking at it. Sometimes I look in the mirror and think “I’m huge, I need to lose 20 lbs, my stomach is flabby” etc. and when I think about going up to a friend and telling them their “stomach looks flabby” I visibly cringe. Why do we think it’s okay to talk down to ourselves?

Part of it I think is generational. We hear our parents talk down about themselves (because we’re all human and we’d all like to improve) and then we do the same thing. And let me say – there is nothing wrong with wanting to get in better shape or focus more at work or relax and stop being so OCD. But there is a point where it is no longer about self improvement and instead becomes about self depreciation. That’s what I’m talking about.

Now I am as guilty (if not more so) than most people. It makes me think of that scene in Mean Girls “Apparently there is more than skinny or fat.” (when they’re all talking about their pores and their noses and their hips). We all fall into that trap, and I find myself doing it more and more post children when I want to magically be super thin and ready to rock a swimsuit. So how to overcome this deeply ingrained body dysmorphia? I’m not sure that we (I) can completely shake it off but I do thing there is something to be said for positivity.

Instead of looking at that picture from last night and saying “Ugh I look terrible” say “Oh you look cute!” to the other person or ” well my outfit is on point”. If you have to say something negative make it “not the best lighting” or “wish the camera angle was higher” instead of about you/your body. When we compare ourselves to those in the media – their entire job is to look good. Private chefs, personal trainers, makeup & hair teams, photographers who follow them only getting the best angles/lighting. You can’t look at them and think less of yourself. Only think well of them.

It’s dang near impossible in today’s society not to compare yourself to models/actresses/bloggers/friends/etc. but you can choose to love yourself. To think about yourself positively. Never stop trying to better yourself but do it for the right reasons and do it without tearing yourself down. Love yourself so others can love you too.

Outdoor Voices & Barre

The studio I teach at (Barre Code Plano for any of my Dallas Natives) kicked off their SPF 2018 Challenge this weekend – the goal is to take 15 classes in 21 days encouraging clients to try new class formats and really commit to their health – with an outdoor Barre class on the boardwalk. It was sponsored by Outdoor Voices (including my super cute outfit) and a super fun time. Going to review the outfit I was gifted to wear, Union Bear where we had brunch after, and Barre in general.

CROP . LEGGINGS . SHOES . FITBIT .

First Off, Outdoor Voices. So I have been seeing their outfits EVERYWHERE and was super excited to try them out. The outfit I wore is linked above and was super nice! even outside in 100 degree heat and the sun it wasn’t too hot, provided ample compression, and was super cute. I will say for me personally the thighs were a little tight but the waist fit TTS (a friend of mine got high waisted and in hind sight I wish I had too – if you’re a high waist fan opt for the higher band) and the material was constrictive (in a  good way) without being too hot. And for a girl who just had a baby and did NOT want to wear a crop top – pretty flattering 🙂

Second, Union Bear Restaurant & Brewery. Super cool atmosphere, on the new boardwalk in Plano/Frisco, and an excellent drink menu (the mimosa was wonderful after a scorching barre class). The negative for me – basically ZERO plant based options. Everything had meat, cheese, or eggs in it as a main ingredient so I found it pretty hard to eat, but my husband and friends all loved their meals and it spoke well to their eclectic menu. Definitely a cool place to hang out and enjoy a patio.

Last, but certainly not least, Barre in general. Barre challenges me in a way no other workout has. Small controlled movements with mind muscle connection that leaves you shaking in the wind. The studio I work at is awesome because it also offers Total Body Conditioning (like barre meets bootcamp), Brawl & interval Brawl (cardio Kickboxing with some barre thrown in), Barre-Did (dancing), and BarRestore (barre meets yoga) so you can get basically every type of workout you want under one roof. Not to mention the community is so incredible. I have made more friends through the studio than any other group in my life.

National Best Friend Day – Friday 5

Hi I’m Cori, Kendall’s Bestie! In honor of National Best Friend Day I am sharing 5 facts about our Friendship!

  1. We met when we worked at a fitness club in college, I worked the front desk & Kendall was on the aquatics team. She didn’t like me at first (silly 19 year old girl things, we got over it) Our friendship was cemented when I bought her a shot glass while I was on a trip in Florida.
  1. We also bonded over our love of all things Harry Potter, we have seen 5 of the 8 movies together (at midnight). For Kendall’s 24th Birthday we went to Harry Potter world. All our Harry Potter Dreams came true! It is seriously the most amazing place, and I know we are both dying to go back!
  1. I called that Kendall would marry her husband David the day she met him. When they first met David made a joke about how stubborn Kendall was, it did not go over well and she came into my job at the time huffing and puffing about how she could not believe that this guy would make that kind of joke! When she calmed down the only response I had was “So you’re going to marry him then right?”
  1. Kendall & I are complete opposites. I think it confuses some people on how we get along so well but we are the true definition of opposites attract. I am very much an introvert until you get to know me, I like my alone time and large groups can easily overwhelm me. Kendall on the other hand thrives in large groups and loves meeting new people, she will tell you her life story and not think twice about it. I like to joke that the way an introvert makes friends is that they get adopted by an extrovert, and Kendall is 100% my extrovert! She has also pushed me to be more outgoing so yay for that!
  1. I found out about both of Kendall’s pregnancies in a restaurant, with her 1st I thought she was mad at me because she hadn’t talked to me in like 4 days, when in reality she was afraid she would tell me, and it was very early on. So when we went to lunch and she told me while we were standing in line, I cried and made a scene in the middle of the restaurant. With her 2nd I randomly asked her, jokingly might I add if she was pregnant while we were at lunch and she got this deer in the headlights look and goes “how did you know?!?!”.

I feel so lucky to have meet Kendall and the fact that we have been friends for so long! Happy National Best Friends Day!!!

WIMCW Father’s Day Gift Ideas

With Father’s Day right around the corner, I thought this week I would share some of my favorite gift ideas for that guy in your life. Some of these are things my husband would want (or asked for).

IMG_2439

I post about this company a fair bit but I LOVE Welly Merck Watches. I have the Los Angelas for women and love it. This one is the Paris for Men and I think it’s very nice looking. Their watches are high quality swiss without the expensive price tag. Use code Lattes15 for 15% off your order!

IMG_2438

I absolutely love the espresso machine my husband got me for mother’s day. If your guy is into coffee, starbucks, and smooth espresso I love the Breville Espresso Machine.

IMG_2437

I don’t even buy Dave normal shirts anymore – if you (or your husband) hasn’t discovered UnTuckIt shirts – go buy one. They’re shorter so they can be worn untucked, high quality, and fit GREAT. It’s all David wears now. They have a ton of cool colors and prints and make polos now too. They also do matching father/son shirts…yeah. Amazing.

IMG_2436

I’m not going to go into too much detail here (LOL) but MeUndies boxers…they’re soft, loose enough to be comfortable, and double as shorts. JK for that last part. I got David a membership of these last year for fathers day (mostly because he needed new undies) and he likes them better than more expensive brands like Tommy Johns.

IMG_2435

David just bought these Gray Jeans (does anyone know the difference between grey & gray? Like is one British? I can never decide which to use LOL) and he swears they are the most comfortable jeans he has. Plus the grey color goes with everything and makes the outfit look a bit nicer than just denim. I recommend their slim fit pair – he tried on the straight leg and they were really baggy.

IMG_2434

David has super wide feet and finding him comfortable shoes is always a HUGE pain. I can’t tell you how many pairs of shoes we have returned or he goodwills because they are too narrow. This Hawaiian shoe brand makes a REALLY cool sneaker, that can get wet and has pores to air dry, and looks sleek that actually fits his foot. Make sure your guy tries them on though because as I mentioned they are wide.

IMG_2433

My husband does the lawn work. He loves it (which is good because I would have no idea where to even start) but he always wants new lawn equipment. His preferred brand is Echo and this year the top of his list is a new blower. I’ve already replaced his weed whacker, lawn mower, and trimmer/edger so this is the last one. For a bit…LOL.

Hopefully this helps you ladies out there still looking for good Father’s Day gift ideas.

Baby Bedtime

IS there anything worse than the first few weeks with a baby who won’t sleep? For both of our kids swaddling was the secret to a calm baby and we relied heavily on sleep sacks (since in class swaddling a doll with a muslin cloth was really easy but a squirming baby in real life was dang near impossible). Recently I’ve discovered my new favorite baby product: Swado Swaddles. They sent mean to try and they are amazing!

6E320D31-2A1E-4DA6-8220-902FA0D79612

These swaddles are super soft and come in tons of patterns, but thats not why I like them so much. Instead of velcro like other swaddle companies (which are not just loud but also really jarring when you open them twisting around the baby) they have…I don’t even know what to call it – Magic fabric? It seriously sticks together even though I can’t explain why and comes apart way easier than velcro but is just as strong when it’s on the baby.  I can’t recommend it enough.

I do not receive any compensation for product purchased but I really love it! Highly recommend.

First Month with Baby

Everett is officially One Month Old today. I seriously cannot even believe it. Recovery this time has been so much easier! I’m already cleared for exercise (3 weeks earlier than with Kensington) and totally feel like myself. It’s a miracle. What’s even crazier is how similar and yet different they are. We had Everett’s Newborn pictures done and this about sums it up:

Where Kenzie was super independent, slept great right off the bat, and was just hanging out (get it? get it? Pun Intended) Everett loves being held, wants constant attention, isn’t a bad sleeper but struggles a bit more than Kensington. We had our amazing photographer (if you’re in Dallas she’s amazing – see her website HERE) recreate this favorite from Kenzie’s shoot with a “boy” spin so that we could have some parallelism with their shoots. Both my beautiful woodland babies. LOL.

We wanted his pictures to be outdoorsy and have lots of earth tones like his nursery (see Nursery blog post HERE). As per usual she did an AMAZING job and totally hit it out of the park.

I swear she is the baby whisperer to make our grumpy old man baby look so peaceful lol. Over the last month we’ve really gotten familiar with his “SOMONE BETTER PICK ME UP RIGHT NOW” cry, finally gotten to see his beautiful eyes (he didn’t open them for days after birth, They’re Navy like Kenzie’s was so I anticipate them changing), and been able to see what a newborn with crazy intense head strength is capable of – caution when holding: he will flip out of your arms with his crazy old man baby strength. #Fact

My photographer also had this incredible idea of doing a vampire setting for one of his pictures. David and I used to camp ALL THE TIME when we first started dating and really bonded over our love of the outdoors. TBH I think it was that ability to travel and love of camping/being outside that really solidified our relationship so of course we jumped at the chance. It’s the cutest thing ever:

IMG_7094

Then because Dave is such a sports guy, and played baseball for years (even was able to walk on in college), we made sure to get an ADORABLE baseball picture of our little boy.

I know everyone says having daughters is more fun because you can dress them up and put them in bows etc. but I am unbelievably excited for sports with this little guy. I’m gonna be that mom who knows all the players stats and goes to every practice. Sorry in advanced.

Then Last, but certainly not least, we took some family pictures. Ugh. They are the best. Seriously.

Are they not the cutest siblings ever? Seriously…

Me just loving on our newest addition. He’s so squishy and I love him.

Dave just looking like a model…like always. And trying to brainwash Everett into being an Aggie and getting a corporate job. I don’t think he’s having it though LOL

IMG_6961

And the worlds best family photo (but I’m biased LOL) Laura was amazing and brought Kensington’s face in from another picture, smoothed out wrinkles in our clothes and made the lighting perfect. I can’t believe it. I’m glad I like it since I ordered a huge canvas for our house. God help us LOL.

Ultimately having two kids under one is…a lot. It think it would be slightly easier if Kensington could walk, but ultimately its not as terrible as everyone warned us (maybe I can thank them for setting bad expectations so I could be pleasantly surprised). It’s definitely more challenging if one of us wants to go do something and the other person ends up 2 on 1 but its still a beautiful suffering. LOL.

XOXO

Kendall
